Once a descriptor of shame, the term ‘cringe’ has resurfaced in contemporary culture with a prefix. Post-Cringe is a call to embrace cringe as a new tradition. It asks us to transcend the awkward and uncomfortable moments that often plague our virtual realities.
Isabella Foster
Isabella Foster is an emerging artist living in nipaluna/Hobart. Working across a multimedia practice, Foster examines and parodies the ways historic power structures reveal themselves in the present. Her practice involves observing and infiltrating specific environments (cultural, conceptual, online, subterranean), allowing the limits of such places to set the conditions and boundaries for her artwork as response. Her current work reflects notions of late-capitalism as belief-system.
After finishing her BFA at UTAS, Foster was invited to present her practice-based research in a 2018 PhD Arts and Cultural Studies conference in Lisbon, Portugal. During this residency, she participated in the 2019 Maumaus Escola des Artes postgraduate Arts Lab.
Foster has exhibited at Sawtooth ARI, Goodgrief ARI, Moonah Arts Centre (TAS), Sydney Contemporary (NSW), and Discordia (VIC), she is a current recipient of the Contemporary Arts Tasmania studio residency 2021- 2022, and a selected participant of SITUATE 22-23.
