LIBERTY POSTCARD EXHIBITION

Complementing the inaugural Hobart Current: Liberty exhibition, The City of Hobart is hosting a program of diverse community activities, providing opportunities to discover and explore this year's theme of ‘liberty’ .

The community were invited to participate in a postcard exhibition through submitting creative responses on an A5 postcard to the provocation ‘Liberty means...’. Artists drew, painted, sculpted, wrote, scribed or photographed their creative responses onto the front of the postcard and gave a brief explanation of their rationale on the back. We had a great response with 54 postcards submitted by 40 artists displayed in an exhibition at the Waterside Pavilion.

THERE IS NO ‘I’ IN ISLAND – RUMMIN Productions

In addition to the postcards, there was an installation of artworks in the gallery created from the film There is No 'I' in Island as well as an opportunity to view the film. These collection of short films cracked open the experience of the COVID – 19 lockdown, where ‘liberties’ were well and truly tested. The films reveal the islands resilience when lutrawita/Tasmania was suddenly cut off from the world.

Multi – award winning Tasmanian film makers Rebecca Thomson and Catherine Pettman asked locals to record their fears, hopes and dreams during the pandemic and received hours of candid voice recordings. These have been lovingly woven into glorious allegorical stories visualised by extraordinary Tasmanian artists and animators, some of which were exhibited in the gallery.
