SOAPBOX BILLBOARDS: THE STARE, Second Echo Ensemble
Complementing the inaugural Hobart Current: Liberty program the City of Hobart is hosting a series of diverse community activities, providing opportunities to discover and explore the notion of ‘liberty’.
Second Echo Ensemble (SEE), are launching a series of portraits to create a place to see and be seen that dismantles ‘normal’ and empowers the SEE artists living with a disability to reflect and share their lived experience on the Soapbox Billboards. This project is purposely named The Stare.
SOAPBOX is a series of billboards that give voice to the City, through responses by writers and artists from the community. It is an ongoing Creative Hobart initiative in the City of Hobart's Public Art program.
WHEN WILL IT DISPLAYED?
The Stare will be on display from 9 April until June 2021.
The Soapbox billboards are located at Mathers Place: in Criterion Lane, on the rear wall of the State Library and the side of the Playhouse Theatre.
WHY LIBERTY?
Creative Director of Hobart Current 2021, Rosie Dennis, has provided LIBERTY as a provocation to ten artists as part of the Hobart Current exhibition in March 2021.
"This theme can be interpreted globally and locally, as celebrating the nation as a whole or a neighbourhood. I’m interested in sparking a fuller conversation about who chooses freedom for whom, in what space and during what time”.
